Brick Types and Specifications
Grades

SW- Brick intended for use under severe weather conditions
MW- Brick intended for use under moderate weather conditions
SS- Sewer brick requiring low absorption and high resistance to abrasion
SM- Sewer brick requiring a lower resistance to abrasion
MS- Brick for manholes or catch basins requiring high resistance to abrasion and for use under severe weather conditions
MM- Brick for manholes or catch basins requiring lower resistance to abrasion and for use under moderate weather conditions
SX- Paving brick intended for use where brick may become frozen
MX- Paving brick intended for where resistance to freezing is not a factor
NX- Paving brick for interior use where a sealer or coating will be used
 
Types

I- Paving brick exposed to extensive abrasion such as driveways
II- Paving brick exposed to intermediate traffic such as exterior
walkways
III- Paving brick exposed to low traffic such as patios in a home
FB- Brick with a nonuniformity in size, color, and texture of each unit
FBS- Brick for general use in exterior and interior walls where wider color ranges and size variations are permitted
FBX- Brick for general use in exterior and interior walls where a high degree of mechanical perfection, narrow color range, and minimal variation in size is permitted
HBA- Hollow brick with a nonuniformity in size, color, and texture of each unit
HBB- Hollow brick for general use in walls where color and texture are not a consideration and a greater variation in size is permitted
HBS- Hollow brick for general use in exterior and interior walls where wider color ranges and size variations are permitted
HBX- Hollow brick for general use in exterior and interior walls where a high degree of mechanical perfection, narrow color range, and a minimal variation in size is permitted
PS- Floor and patio brick intended for general use installed with or without mortar joints where bonds do not require extremely close dimensional tolerances
PX- Floor and patio brick intend for installation without mortar joints where exceptionally close dimensional tolerances are required as a result of bond patterns or construction requirements
PS- Floor and patio units manufactured and selected to produce characteristic architectural effects resulting from nonuniformity in size, color, and texture of individual units
